Porter Chess Tournament Delayed
Because of inclement weather, today's (1/21) Chess Tournament is delayed until 28 January.  All registered students will NOT have to re-register. Registration WILL be reopened for anyone else who would like to join.
Opening Chess Techniques
Good opening technique increases your chances for winning.

 1.  Open with a center pawn
 2.  Bring your Knights before your Bishops
 3.  Don't move the same piece twice
 4.  Make as few pawn moves as possible in the opening
 5.  Don't bring the Queen out to early
 6.  Castle as soon as possible, preferably on the King Side
 7.  Always play to gain control of the center of the board
 8.  Try to maintain at least one pawn in the center of the board
 9.  Try to get a Rook onto an open file
10.  Keep your Knights in the center of the board

These rules are not absolute, but are strong general guides.

Four Move Check Mate
New Chess Players Beware:

It is very common for players to try to trap you with the Scholar's Mate aka the 4 move checkmate) in the opening of a game. Hundreds of games are won and lost with this one check mate.

Worksheet #1  OFFENSIVE

Worksheet #2  DEFENSIVE

Please watch the following videos and practice recognizing and defending against the "Square of Doom":
